Which cracks matter

The direction, width, and shape of a crack say a lot about what caused it. Here's the short version a contractor confirms in person:

  • Horizontal cracks — take seriouslyOften mean soil pressure is pushing a wall in. This is the structural one to act on.
  • Stair-step cracks in block/brickFollow the mortar joints and usually point to settlement at one part of the foundation.
  • Vertical / diagonal cracksCommon in poured walls. Often shrinkage or minor settling, but worth measuring if they widen.

How cracks get repaired

Which foundation cracks are serious?
Horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks in block, and any crack wider than about a quarter inch or growing over time point to structural movement and deserve a prompt look. How are foundation cracks repaired?
A non-structural crack in a poured wall is injected with epoxy or polyurethane to seal it against water. A structural crack also needs reinforcement such as carbon-fiber straps, and the movement causing it may need piers or wall bracing. The contractor matches the method to the cause.
Can I just seal the crack myself?
A hardware-store patch may hide a hairline crack for a while, but it won't stop water under pressure or hold a moving wall. If the crack keeps coming back or is growing, that's a sign of an active problem a patch won't fix.
Does a crack mean my whole foundation is failing?
